Lincoln, IL – A significant heat wave is set to impact Central Illinois this weekend, with the heat index expected to soar to 102 degrees by Sunday.
According to the US National Weather Service, temperatures will rise considerably today and Thursday, with humidity levels increasing. On Thursday, the heat index is forecasted to reach the mid to upper 90s. This spike in humidity and temperature will culminate in a cold front bringing severe storms late Thursday afternoon and evening. Some of these storms may include damaging wind gusts and heavy rain.
By Friday, the region will experience slightly cooler temperatures, ranging from 86 to 89 degrees, as the cold front temporarily reduces humidity. However, this respite will be brief. Saturday will see temperatures again between 86 and 89 degrees with relatively lower humidity.
On Sunday, the heat will intensify, with temperatures soaring to 94-96 degrees and the heat index peaking at 102 degrees. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities, and take necessary precautions against the extreme heat.
The US National Weather Service emphasizes the importance of staying weather aware and being prepared to take shelter if severe storms approach. This heat wave serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of extreme weather conditions in the region.
