Champaign, IL — Central Illinois remains under a cold weather advisory as dangerously low temperatures and wind chills continue to grip the region. Wind chills as low as -20°F are expected, with the advisory set to remain in effect through early Wednesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lincoln, IL, temperatures will stay below zero overnight and throughout the day Tuesday. Wind gusts of up to 20 mph are creating life-threatening conditions, with frostbite possible in as little as 30 minutes for exposed skin.
Residents across Champaign, Springfield, and Peoria are urged to limit outdoor exposure, dress in multiple layers, and ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies. The NWS reports that slightly warmer conditions are expected by Thursday, but the cold will persist until midweek.
Additional snow chances may occur along I-74 tonight and Wednesday night, but accumulations are expected to remain minimal. The bitter cold highlights a renewed surge of Arctic air moving across the Midwest.
Travelers and residents are advised to check local alerts and use caution outdoors. For safety, hats, gloves, and insulated clothing are essential in these hazardous conditions.
