Central Illinois – Bitter cold conditions are expected across much of central Illinois tonight into Monday morning, with single-digit temperatures and dangerous wind chills, according to the National Weather Service in Lincoln.
In social media updates posted early Sunday, the National Weather Service said temperatures will fall into the single digits across most of central Illinois, with the coldest conditions expected overnight. Wind chill values of 5 to 20 below zero will be common, prompting a Cold Weather Advisory for areas along and north of Interstate 70.
Forecast graphics show the coldest wind chills occurring late tonight through early Monday morning. The advisory remains in effect through midday Monday, when temperatures are expected to slowly recover.
The National Weather Service also noted that occasional light snow or flurries may occur through tonight, though no significant accumulation was indicated. The primary concern remains the dangerous cold, especially during the overnight and early morning hours.
Residents are urged to dress for the weather, wear hats and gloves, limit time outdoors, and check on older family members, friends, and neighbors. Officials also recommend keeping pets indoors and using caution when traveling during the coldest period.
