Springfield, IL – Unseasonably warm and dry weather is expected to persist through the weekend across central Illinois, raising the threat of field fires, according to the US National Weather Service (NWS) in Lincoln.

The NWS reports that a combination of ongoing drought conditions, low humidity, and increasing south winds will lead to an elevated fire risk, particularly on Sunday. Afternoon humidity levels may drop to 25–35 percent, especially north of Interstate 70, creating conditions favorable for fast-spreading fires.

According to the NWS, residents should avoid open burning and exercise caution during outdoor and harvest activities, as even small sparks could ignite dry vegetation. Burning is discouraged — and banned in some local areas — through the weekend.

Temperatures are forecast to remain in the upper 80s through Sunday, before a cold front brings showers and a cooldown early next week. Monday brings a 30 percent chance of rain, increasing to 50 percent by Tuesday, which may help ease the dry spell.

Officials urge farmers and residents to stay alert to local burn bans and weather updates as conditions can change rapidly.
