Springfield, Illinois – Showers and thunderstorms will return each afternoon across Central Illinois this week, with storms strongest south of I-72 and a few severe cells possible near I-70 today. High temperatures will climb into the upper 80s to near 90, keeping humidity levels high and roads slick for evening commuters.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, daily chances for showers and storms will persist through Thursday, with precipitation most likely during afternoon and evening hours. Isolated heavy downpours may cause localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas from Decatur and Taylorville down to Effingham and Mattoon.

Motorists along I-72 and I-70 should watch for reduced visibility, water ponding, and the potential for strong wind gusts during storms. Outdoor plans may need to be adjusted, and families are urged to keep devices charged and avoid flooded roadways. A few isolated severe thunderstorms with damaging winds or hail could develop, mainly in the southern portions of the region.

This unsettled pattern marks one of the most active July weeks for storms in recent years, reminiscent of the 2021 summer storm cycle. Highs will remain warm—generally 83 to 92 degrees—with muggy nights.

Thunderstorm chances will continue daily, with new weather alerts possible as the week unfolds. Residents should stay tuned for further updates and be prepared for changing conditions.
