Pocatello, Idaho – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for portions of central Idaho from early Wednesday morning through Thursday evening, with heavy mountain snow expected to significantly impact travel, according to the National Weather Service in Pocatello.

The warning includes the Sun Valley region and the Big Lost Highlands and Copper Basin, affecting communities such as Ketchum, Sun Valley, Galena, and Copper Basin. The warning is scheduled to begin at 5 a.m. MST Wednesday and continue until 5 p.m. MST Thursday.

Forecasters say snowfall totals will vary by elevation. Between 6,500 and 8,000 feet, accumulations of approximately 5 inches to 1 foot are expected. Above 8,000 feet, snow totals are forecast to reach 1 to 2 feet, with the highest peaks likely receiving up to 3 feet of snow. Around Galena Summit, about 1 foot of snowfall is expected.

Winds gusting up to 35 mph will contribute to blowing and drifting snow, further reducing visibility in mountain passes. According to the National Weather Service, travel could become very difficult to impossible, particularly along Highway 75 near Galena Summit.

Hazardous conditions are expected to impact both the Wednesday morning and evening commutes, especially for mountain travelers and those heading to or from ski areas. Rapidly changing conditions may lead to temporary road closures or delays.

The National Weather Service advises motorists to avoid unnecessary travel during the warning period. Those who must travel should carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight, and check the latest road conditions by calling 511 or visiting 511.idaho.gov.

Mountain residents and holiday travelers are urged to monitor forecast updates as conditions evolve through Thursday.
