ATLANTA, Ga. – Spotty thunderstorms could develop across north and central Georgia this afternoon, bringing brief bursts of rain and gusty winds from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, most areas will stay dry, but where storms form, lightning and localized wind gusts up to 40 mph are possible. Hail is not expected beyond pea-sized, and tornado risk remains near zero.
Atlanta, Athens, and Macon are among the cities where scattered storms could briefly impact evening commutes. The storms are expected to be short-lived, but they may produce frequent lightning and sudden downpours, especially along I-75 and I-20 corridors. Outdoor activities and after-school sports may see delays in counties stretching from Rome to Warner Robins.
Residents are advised to monitor skies closely and head indoors if thunder is heard. Drivers should watch for slick roads during passing showers, particularly during rush hour.
The National Weather Service notes that this afternoon offers the best, though still limited, chance for rain over the next several days. Additional advisories could be issued if stronger cells develop.
