Orlando, Fla. – Central Florida residents from Volusia to Osceola counties will face dangerous heat conditions Thursday, with the National Weather Service warning of a heat index climbing to 109 degrees by midafternoon. The advisory remains in effect from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, the combination of high humidity and hot air temperatures will sharply increase the risk of heat-related illness. The advisory covers Volusia, Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties, including major cities like Orlando, Daytona Beach, Cocoa, and Palm Bay.
Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, stay hydrated, and seek air conditioning whenever possible. Those who must work outside are advised to take frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas. Vulnerable groups — including young children, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses — are at heightened risk for heat stroke and should be checked on regularly.
Temperatures will remain well above seasonal averages into the weekend, with heat advisories possible again in the coming days.
