Orlando, Fla. – Brutal heat will blanket much of Central and West-Central Florida today, with heat index values climbing as high as 110° from noon to 6 p.m., triggering a widespread heat advisory across dozens of counties.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Tampa and Melbourne, the advisory spans from Pinellas and Hillsborough counties on the Gulf Coast to Volusia and Brevard counties on the Atlantic side. Cities under alert include Tampa, Orlando, Lakeland, Kissimmee, and Daytona Beach.
Officials warn that the combination of soaring temperatures and stifling humidity may cause heat-related illnesses, especially for those working or exercising outdoors. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration urges outdoor workers to take frequent shaded breaks, stay hydrated, and avoid peak afternoon hours.
In Tampa, residents may experience the highest heat index of the summer so far. Inland areas like Polk, Highlands, and Orange counties are especially vulnerable, where urban heat retention can intensify the effects. In Volusia and Brevard counties, beachgoers are advised to avoid direct sun exposure and monitor for signs of heat exhaustion.
Heat advisories are expected to remain in effect through 6 p.m. today. Further alerts may be issued if high humidity lingers into the workweek.
