Melbourne, Fla. – Strong storms will build across Central and East Central Florida Friday afternoon, creating dangerous conditions both onshore and offshore. The National Weather Service in Melbourne warns of a 70–80% chance of thunderstorms between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m., with wind gusts up to 50 mph possible.

According to the NWS, the highest storm risk will stretch from Daytona Beach through Melbourne and south into Port St. Lucie, where localized flooding and lightning could disrupt evening plans. Along the coast, a high risk of deadly rip currents remains in effect, and poor boating conditions continue as seas rise between 4 and 6 feet. Small craft are urged to remain in port, particularly near inlets from Sebastian to Jupiter, where strong outgoing tides will make navigation especially hazardous.

Drivers should prepare for sudden downpours and reduced visibility on I-95, I-4, and the Florida Turnpike during the evening commute. Beachgoers are advised to stay out of the water and avoid fishing piers and jetties, where rip currents will be strongest.

Storm chances remain elevated through the weekend, with afternoon activity likely each day. More advisories could be issued if severe wind gusts strengthen into Saturday.
