Volusia County, Fla. – Streets in coastal Volusia County are flooding Friday morning after torrential downpours drenched parts of east central Florida. The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a Flash Flood Warning through 12:15 p.m., urging drivers to stay off inundated roads as rain continues to fall.
According to the National Weather Service, Doppler radar detected thunderstorms dropping between 2 and 4 inches of rain across the region, with another 1 to 3 inches possible before storms taper off. Flash flooding is ongoing in areas with poor drainage and low-lying terrain.
Communities including Port Orange, Edgewater, Oak Hill, and New Smyrna Beach have reported water pooling on highways and neighborhood streets. Emergency officials warn that even shallow water can be dangerous and urge residents not to drive through flooded areas.
Localized flooding has been reported near Apollo Beach, Turtle Mound, and Samsula-Spruce Creek, where smaller creeks and drainage systems have exceeded capacity.
Flood warnings remain in effect through early afternoon, with additional advisories possible if heavy rain lingers along the coast. Residents should monitor weather alerts and avoid travel until conditions improve.
