Orlando, Fla. – Flash flooding is possible across much of central and west-central Florida today, with up to 7 inches of rain expected in some areas as tropical moisture surges inland from the Atlantic.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Tampa, Jacksonville, and Melbourne, a sprawling Flood Watch remains in effect through 8 p.m. for cities including Orlando, Tampa, Ocala, Lakeland, and Daytona Beach. The heaviest rain bands are linked to disorganized low pressure near the Space Coast, bringing widespread rainfall totals between 1 and 3 inches, with isolated pockets exceeding 6 inches.
In Polk, Marion, and Volusia counties, urban and low-lying neighborhoods could quickly flood due to poor drainage. Coastal areas from Citrus and Pasco to Brevard may also see rising creeks and ponding on roadways, especially during the afternoon commute. Authorities are urging drivers to avoid water-covered roads and prepare for brief road closures.
Residents should secure outdoor items, keep emergency kits handy, and avoid unnecessary travel. With saturated ground and additional storms likely into the evening, power outages and transportation delays remain a concern.
More updates and potential flood warnings may be issued later today as conditions evolve.
