Melbourne, Fla. – Swimmers along Florida’s east coast could face a heightened rip current risk through the weekend as the National Hurricane Center monitors two weak tropical disturbances in the Atlantic. The systems, located in the central and eastern tropical Atlantic, each hold a 20% chance of development over the next seven days.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, the first disturbance will not bring direct impacts to east central Florida other than the increased surf hazard. The second system remains too far out to determine any local effects, but forecasters are urging residents to stay aware as hurricane season enters its most active stretch.

Beachgoers are advised to swim near lifeguard stations and avoid venturing into rough surf, especially during outgoing tides. Officials recommend checking local beach condition reports before entering the water.

Meteorologists say this is a timely reminder to review hurricane preparedness plans, secure emergency supplies, and ensure weather alerts are activated on phones and radios.
