California – A sudden jolt rattled homes and sent hanging lights swaying across the Bay Area, as a moderate earthquake struck just off the Central California coast earlier today.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a magnitude 4.9 earthquake hit about 1 km east-southeast of Boulder Creek near Santa Cruz at a depth of roughly 10.9 kilometers. Shaking was widely reported across San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, and surrounding communities, with intensity levels reaching as high as VI on the shaking scale.
Residents across Silicon Valley and the Peninsula described brief but noticeable shaking, strong enough to rattle windows and shift small objects. Areas closest to the epicenter, including Santa Cruz County and the Santa Cruz Mountains, experienced the strongest motion.
No widespread damage has been confirmed so far, but officials are monitoring for localized impacts. Minor shaking like this can still loosen debris, especially in older structures. Residents should check for cracks, fallen items, or gas leaks.
Transportation systems, including BART and regional roadways like US-101 and I-280, appear to be operating normally, though brief slowdowns were possible immediately after the quake.
Aftershocks remain possible through the day and into the weekend, though most are expected to be weaker. Experts note this event is likely the main shock in the sequence.
