Monterey, Calif. – Coastal residents across central California could have as little as 10 to 15 minutes to move to higher ground after a strong earthquake triggers a tsunami warning.
According to guidance from the National Weather Service and the Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group, tsunami hazard zones extend along low-lying coastal areas from Santa Cruz through Monterey Bay down to San Luis Obispo County. Communities including Santa Cruz, Watsonville, Monterey, Marina, and Morro Bay face the greatest risk, especially in harbors, beaches, and near river mouths.
Officials stress that anyone in a designated tsunami zone should move inland or to higher ground immediately after strong shaking. Waiting for an official warning could cost critical time, as tsunami waves can arrive quickly and continue for hours.
Key evacuation routes along Highway 1 and nearby coastal roads may become congested, making early action essential. Residents are encouraged to review tsunami hazard maps, identify safe zones ahead of time, and sign up for emergency alerts.
Preparedness steps include knowing multiple evacuation routes, keeping emergency kits ready, and planning for pets. Officials will continue outreach efforts, and additional drills or alerts may be issued to ensure communities remain ready.
