Santa Maria, Calif. – Mariners along the Central California coast face dangerous conditions tonight as gale-force winds continue offshore between Point Piedras Blancas and Point Sal. Gusts up to 35 knots and seas nearing 9 feet are expected to persist through early Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles, a Gale Warning remains in effect until 1 a.m. Thursday for waters 10 to 60 nautical miles offshore. The strong northwest winds could capsize small vessels, damage larger boats, and create highly hazardous conditions for commercial and recreational mariners.
Communities including Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Maria may notice impacts at local harbors, where boaters are being urged to delay departures or secure vessels. The NWS warns that navigating in these conditions could be life-threatening, particularly for smaller craft.
Officials recommend remaining in port, seeking safe harbor, or altering course until winds ease. Those already at sea should secure gear and prepare for rough swells through the overnight hours.
