PHOENIX, Ariz. – A widespread flood threat is unfolding across central Arizona this weekend as rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms drench the Phoenix metro and surrounding valleys. The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a Flood Watch through early Monday, warning of dangerous flash flooding in washes, creeks, and low-lying urban areas.
According to the National Weather Service, repeated thunderstorms producing 1 to 3 inches of rainfall could trigger flooding along roadways, particularly near I-10, Loop 202, and State Route 87. Localized totals above 3 inches are possible in mountain foothills and east valley communities including Mesa, Chandler, and Apache Junction.
Flash Flood Warnings were posted overnight for portions of Maricopa and Pinal counties, where radar showed intense rainfall early Sunday morning. Emergency managers urge residents to avoid flooded roads. “Turn around, don’t drown,” officials said, noting several rescues have already been reported near normally dry washes.
The heaviest rain is expected through Sunday evening, tapering off before dawn Monday as drier air moves in from the west. Commuters should expect ponding and slow travel through early Monday morning. Power outages and brief wind gusts are possible under stronger cells.
By Tuesday, sunshine and calmer weather will return, marking a welcome break after a wet fall weekend. Residents are urged to monitor updates from the NWS Phoenix office and local emergency channels. Keep cell phones charged, avoid unnecessary travel, and secure outdoor items until the storms clear.
