GILA, Ariz. – Flooding along and near Tonto Creek is expected to continue through Tuesday evening as heavy rain pushes water levels above action stage, according to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff. At 11:20 a.m. Monday, river gauges showed levels near six feet—roughly two feet above normal—prompting a Flood Warning for Gila County and parts of east-central Arizona.

The NWS reports that low-water crossings and typically dry washes are now inundated, making travel dangerous near the Tonto Basin and along Tonto Creek. Water levels are expected to hold near current levels for several more hours before gradually receding Tuesday night.

Drivers are urged to avoid crossing flooded roads and to seek alternate routes. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains the key safety message, as most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles. Residents near creeks and drainage areas should monitor local alerts and be prepared to move to higher ground if conditions worsen.

Flood warnings remain in effect until 8:15 p.m. MST Tuesday, and additional advisories may be issued if rainfall continues.
