Fairbanks, Alaska – Drivers across Alaska’s Central Arctic Plains and the Brooks Range should prepare for icy conditions beginning late Tuesday night, as a winter storm moves into the region with freezing rain and accumulating ice.
According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 10 p.m. Tuesday through 1 a.m. Thursday, with up to one-tenth of an inch of ice expected along the Dalton Highway corridor, particularly near Anaktuvuk Pass, Franklin Bluffs, and Galbraith Lake. The most severe conditions are forecast along the northern side of the Brooks Range.
Travel on Dalton Highway between mileposts 232 and 387 may become treacherous, especially during Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Icy stretches and poor visibility could challenge commercial haulers and local drivers alike. Authorities urge drivers to carry extra supplies, including food, water, and emergency lighting.
Conditions are expected to improve after 1 a.m. Thursday, but additional advisories may be issued if ice persists or precipitation intensifies.
