Charleston, WV – Scattered showers and storms will build across West Virginia this week as heat and humidity climb, raising the risk of heavy rainfall through Friday. While the likelihood of severe storms remains low, slow-moving cells could bring downpours capable of causing localized flooding.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, isolated mountain storms will develop today, with lowland highs reaching the upper 80s to low 90s. Storm coverage increases Tuesday afternoon, especially in the mountains, where highs will hover in the 70s. Widespread showers and storms are expected Wednesday, followed by lingering afternoon activity into Thursday.
Travelers should be alert for sudden heavy rain reducing visibility, particularly along I-79, I-77, and U.S. Route 19. The NWS advises avoiding flooded roadways, monitoring weather alerts, and securing outdoor items that could be damaged in storms.
Rain chances will stay elevated through the work week before drier conditions potentially arrive for the weekend.
