WORCESTER, Mass. – Central and Western Massachusetts are under a Winter Storm Watch from Tuesday morning through late Tuesday night, as the season’s first major snowstorm targets the region with heavy snow and hazardous travel. The National Weather Service in Boston/Norton warns that accumulations greater than 6 inches are possible across much of the state, including Worcester, Springfield, Greenfield, and Lowell.
According to the National Weather Service, snow will begin early Tuesday and quickly intensify, with the heaviest snow expected during the morning and evening commutes. Travel could become treacherous along I-90, I-91, and Route 2, as visibility drops and roads turn snow-covered. Snowfall rates of an inch per hour are possible, especially across higher elevations in the Worcester Hills and Berkshires.
Motorists should expect delays, plan for longer travel times, and keep an emergency kit in vehicles. The wet, heavy snow could also lead to scattered power outages where tree limbs and wires are weighed down.
Snow is forecast to taper off late Tuesday night, but icy patches may persist into early Wednesday as temperatures remain below freezing.
