Richmond, Va. – Thunderstorms sweeping across Virginia Sunday could bring dangerous flash flooding to much of the state, with cities from Richmond to Lynchburg bracing for rapidly rising water through late tonight.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Blacksburg and Wakefield, a Flood Watch remains in effect for more than 20 counties—including Alleghany, Rockbridge, Bedford, Appomattox, Buckingham, and Campbell in central and west-central Virginia, as well as the City of Richmond, Amelia, Caroline, and Mecklenburg. The alert runs until 2 a.m. Monday, with scattered storms expected to dump 2 to 3 additional inches of rain on already saturated ground.

Urban areas like Richmond and South Boston face a heightened risk for street and basement flooding, while rural communities could see creeks and streams quickly overflow their banks. Major roadways—including portions of U.S. 460, U.S. 29, and Interstate 64—may be impacted if heavy rain persists or slow-moving storms develop this evening.

Officials urge residents in flood-prone zones to remain vigilant, avoid low-water crossings, and never drive through water-covered roads. Those in mobile homes or low-lying areas should have an evacuation plan ready, charge mobile devices, and gather emergency supplies in case flash flooding develops.

This latest flood threat follows a week of steady rainfall, with 2 to 4 inches already falling across central Virginia. More Flood Warnings could be issued overnight if rainfall rates intensify.

Flood Watches are expected to remain active through late tonight, with updates and potential alerts coming as conditions develop.
