Richmond, Va. – Roads across central and southeast Virginia could quickly flood today as saturated ground and new downpours trigger a renewed flash flood threat.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Flood Watch remains in effect through late Thursday night for more than 40 counties stretching from Richmond and Hopewell south to Emporia and east toward the Northern Neck and Maryland’s lower Eastern Shore. Some areas have already seen 2 to 6 inches of rain in the past 48 hours, and another 2 to 3 inches are possible in localized thunderstorms.

High-risk areas include Prince Edward, Goochland, New Kent, Brunswick, and James City counties, where low-lying roads and small creeks may overflow. In the Richmond metro, flooding is most likely in flood-prone zones such as Midlothian Turnpike, Broad Rock Boulevard, and areas near the James River.

Drivers should avoid low-water crossings and never attempt to drive through flooded roads. Residents in flood-prone areas should secure valuables and be prepared to act quickly if warnings are issued.

Scattered storms could continue into the overnight hours, with conditions expected to improve by Friday morning. Additional alerts may be issued if rainfall intensifies.
