Wichita, Kansas – Heat indices soaring past 100 degrees are set to grip central and southern Kansas through Friday, raising concerns about outdoor safety and energy strain as the region enters a prolonged stretch of intense heat.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, temperatures will climb steadily from today’s highs in the upper 80s and low 90s to peak between 95–102 degrees by Friday. The most oppressive heat is expected across South Central and Southeast Kansas, where humidity will push feels-like temperatures well into the triple digits. The advisory covers cities including Wichita, Hutchinson, Winfield, and Emporia.
Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets. Prolonged exposure may lead to heat-related illnesses, especially for those without adequate cooling or working outdoors.
While skies will remain mostly dry and sunny, overnight lows in the 70s will offer little relief. Air conditioners are likely to run nonstop, increasing the risk of power demand spikes.
This stretch of extreme heat is forecast to last through Friday evening, with slightly lower—but still above average—temperatures lingering into Saturday. Further advisories are possible as the week progresses.
