Wichita, KS – A widespread freeze warning is in effect for much of Central, South Central, and Southeast Kansas, with temperatures expected to fall as low as 28°F overnight into Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the freeze watch began late Sunday and will remain in effect until 9 a.m. Monday. Affected areas include cities such as Wichita, Hutchinson, Salina, Chanute, and McPherson. This unseasonably cold snap could result in frost and freeze conditions, potentially damaging crops, tender vegetation, and outdoor plumbing.
The drop in temperatures follows a day of decreasing clouds with highs near 54°F and a brisk north wind. By Monday, skies will clear and temperatures will rebound into the mid-60s. However, early morning conditions will be cold enough to pose risks to agriculture and exposed irrigation systems.
Residents are advised to take protective measures, including covering sensitive plants, draining outdoor pipes, and checking on vulnerable individuals and animals.
Though spring has begun, the return of freezing weather highlights Kansas’ vulnerability to late-season cold spells. No spotter activation is anticipated at this time.
