Wichita, KS — A heightened fire danger across central and south Kansas is prompting weather alerts today, with a strong chance of thunderstorms developing by Friday evening and continuing into early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect west of I-135 through Wednesday due to low humidity, strong south-to-southwest winds, and high temperatures approaching the low 90s. These conditions create a very high to extreme fire risk across counties including Reno, Saline, and McPherson.

Beginning late Friday, thunderstorm activity is expected to increase, particularly across southeast Kansas. The greatest storm potential extends through Sunday, with a risk for isolated strong storms Friday night capable of producing dime- to quarter-sized hail and winds of 50 to 60 mph. Localized flooding is also possible, especially in areas like Montgomery and Labette counties.

While severe storms are not widespread, the forecast includes a 60% chance of showers Saturday and Sunday, with additional storm chances through Tuesday. Winds will remain gusty, and residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and stay alert for shifting fire and weather conditions.

Preparedness tips include securing outdoor items, monitoring local alerts, and limiting ignition sources.
