Buffalo, NY – A Flood Watch remains in effect across upstate New York and parts of Vermont from Sunday morning through Monday evening as heavy rainfall and snowmelt could lead to rising water levels in rivers and streams.
According to the National Weather Service, areas at highest risk include Jefferson, Lewis, and Oswego counties in central New York, as well as the Tug Hill Plateau and the foothills of the Adirondacks. Additional Flood Watches cover northern New York, including St. Lawrence, Franklin, and Clinton counties, as well as Vermont’s central and northern regions.
Forecasters warn that 1 to 1.5 inches of rain is expected to fall from Sunday through Sunday night. Combined with warm temperatures rapidly melting the snowpack, this could lead to excessive runoff and potential flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and along streams and rivers. The Mohawk and Sacandaga Rivers, Fish Creek, and West Canada Creek are among the waterways of concern. Ice jams may also contribute to localized flooding.
Residents in flood-prone areas should stay alert and prepare for potential evacuations if conditions worsen. Officials advise monitoring weather updates and moving valuables to higher ground. For the latest information, visit weather.gov.
