Albuquerque, N.M. – Gusty storms and dangerous flash flooding could impact much of central and northern New Mexico through midnight Saturday, especially near burn scar areas like Ruidoso and Hermit’s Peak.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, heavy rainfall, small hail, and erratic winds are expected across the region this afternoon into the overnight hours. Flash Flood Watches remain in effect for the Ruidoso and Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon burn scar zones, where rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour could trigger localized debris flows, impassable roads, and sudden rises in creeks and dry arroyos.

Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Grants, and Socorro all face elevated storm chances—with rainfall potential over 60% in many spots. The I-25 and I-40 corridors may see delays due to standing water or brief flooding, especially during evening travel hours. Chama and Gallup have the highest rain chances near 80%, while even Las Vegas and Ruidoso sit above 70%.

Drier, warmer weather is expected to return Sunday through Tuesday, before another round of storms mid-to-late next week, especially across western and central New Mexico.

Warnings remain in effect through tonight. Residents in flood-prone or recently burned areas should stay alert and avoid low-lying roadways.
