Richmond, Va. – Severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep across much of Virginia through 11 p.m. Friday, bringing the risk of 65 mph winds and hail up to the size of ping pong balls.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, the region is under a slight risk for severe weather with an 80% chance a watch will be issued by early evening. The storms are forecast to move west to east, affecting areas including Richmond, Norfolk, and the I-95 corridor. All severe weather threats are possible, including damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes.
Localized flooding is also a concern in low-lying areas, especially in parts of Southside Virginia. Residents should secure outdoor items, remain weather-aware, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. If a warning is issued, seek shelter in an interior room away from windows.
Storm timing confidence remains high, with development expected between 5 and 11 p.m. Stay off the roads during heavy downpours and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather activity.
Additional alerts may be issued as conditions evolve. Monitor the NWS and local emergency services for updates through tonight.
