Birmingham, Alabama – A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for parts of central Alabama as forecasters continue to monitor the potential for significant winter weather this weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the overall forecast has not changed significantly, though uncertainty remains regarding how far south the greatest impacts may extend. Officials note that even small temperature changes could dramatically affect where ice and snow develop.
The watch is in effect from 6 p.m. Friday through 6 p.m. Sunday for northern portions of central Alabama. Forecasters say there is potential for more than a quarter inch of ice accumulation, along with up to 1 inch of snow in some areas.
The NWS warns that hazardous travel conditions are possible, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads. Ice accumulation could also lead to scattered power outages, especially where freezing rain becomes more persistent.
Impacts are currently expected to range from minor to major across central Alabama, with the highest risk focused in northern sections of the region. Dangerous travel conditions and power disruptions are listed as the primary concerns if ice accumulates as forecast.
Residents are encouraged to prepare now by ensuring access to safe backup heating sources, planning for potential power outages, and closely monitoring forecast updates. Officials stress that the highlighted threat area may shift as new data becomes available.
Weekend travelers, shift workers, and families with limited heating options may be most affected if conditions deteriorate Friday night or Saturday.
The National Weather Service says additional updates and possible advisories or warnings will be issued as confidence increases.
