BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A powerful push of Arctic air will settle over Alabama late Sunday night, bringing the coldest temperatures of the fall season and prompting a Freeze Warning and Freeze Watch across much of the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a Freeze Warning is in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday, followed by a Freeze Watch from Monday evening through Tuesday morning. Temperatures are expected to fall as low as 25°F across central and northern Alabama and near 31°F farther southwest. Even colder readings, possibly down to 20°F, are likely in sheltered valleys by early Tuesday.
The warnings include Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Gadsden, Clanton, Marion, and Centre, as well as surrounding counties from Marion and Walker to Tallapoosa and Chambers. Officials urge residents to wrap exposed pipes, drain sprinkler systems, and bring pets and plants indoors before sunset Sunday.
Alabama Department of Transportation crews remind drivers that frost or ice may form on bridges and overpasses early Monday and Tuesday, particularly along I-20, I-65, and U.S. 82. The cold snap will likely end the growing season statewide, with widespread frost expected through midweek.
Temperatures will slowly rebound later in the week under mostly sunny skies.
