Birmingham, AL – Thunderstorms and heavy showers will dominate central Alabama today, with highs in the low 70s before temperatures plummet overnight. Residents are urged to prepare for rapidly changing conditions as showers give way to near-freezing temperatures across much of the region.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), storms are most likely this afternoon, tapering off into the evening. The heaviest rain is forecasted along I-65 and surrounding areas, with up to three-quarters of an inch expected in some locations. As the storms clear, temperatures will drop to the low 30s in northern counties and mid-40s further south.

Drivers should be cautious, particularly during the afternoon commute, as localized flooding and wet roads could cause delays. Gusty winds of up to 25 mph will also contribute to challenging driving conditions.

Looking ahead, Wednesday will bring sunny skies but much cooler weather, with highs only reaching the upper 40s. Nights will be frigid, dipping into the 20s in some areas. By Thursday, sunshine will persist, keeping temperatures steady in the upper 40s to low 50s. Rain chances return over the weekend, particularly Saturday evening into Sunday, with highs climbing to the upper 50s.

Residents are encouraged to dress warmly during the week and monitor weather alerts for any updates.
