Montgomery, Alabama – Torrential rainfall is threatening much of central and eastern Alabama, prompting an urgent flood watch that remains in effect through Tuesday evening. Rising rivers and swollen streams could flood roads and neighborhoods from Montgomery to Auburn and as far north as Anniston.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, heavy downpours will continue into Tuesday night, putting Barbour, Bullock, Calhoun, Chambers, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, Coosa, Elmore, Lee, Macon, Montgomery, Pike, Randolph, Russell, Talladega, and Tallapoosa counties on alert. Forecasters warn that slow-moving thunderstorms could drop several inches of rain in just a few hours, creating dangerous flash flooding, especially in low-lying or flood-prone areas.

Local roads, including major thoroughfares through Montgomery, Opelika, and Talladega, could quickly become impassable. Drivers are urged to avoid water-covered streets and to turn around if encountering flooded roadways. Residents in flood-prone zones should charge devices and prepare to move to higher ground if necessary.

With more rain expected, the flood risk remains high into Tuesday evening. Further warnings and alerts are possible as the situation develops.
