Birmingham, Ala. – Damaging winds and large hail could impact central and southern Alabama Saturday afternoon as a round of severe thunderstorms sweeps across the state ahead of the holiday weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a Level 1 marginal risk for severe storms will be in effect from midday Saturday through the evening hours. Wind gusts could reach up to 60 mph, with quarter-sized hail possible, particularly during peak heating between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Cities including Birmingham, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, Auburn, and Selma lie within the risk zone, with I-65 and I-85 likely to see slick spots and reduced visibility during downpours. The storms may trigger isolated power outages and pose risks to unsecured outdoor objects.
Residents should have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and access to sturdy shelter. The threat is part of a multi-day pattern, with additional rounds of storms likely Sunday.
More updates are expected Saturday morning as the system develops. Stay alert and avoid outdoor plans during storm hours.
