Cedar Rapids, IA – A powerful blast of northwest winds is expected to sweep across eastern Iowa, northwest Illinois, and parts of northeast Missouri late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities.
Forecasters warn that wind gusts may exceed 45 to 55 mph overnight as a strong cold front moves through the region. The highest gusts are expected near Ottumwa, Cedar Rapids, and Washington, Iowa, extending east toward Moline and Macomb, Illinois.
In addition to strong winds, areas of blowing snow are possible—mainly in northwestern Iowa—where light snow showers could reduce visibility. Drivers traveling on north-south oriented roads may experience difficult handling conditions, particularly for high-profile vehicles.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor objects and holiday decorations, and to use caution during overnight and early morning travel. Winds are expected to gradually diminish by midday Wednesday.
