Albany, NY – A winter storm may bring several inches of snow to eastern New York and western New England from Friday afternoon into Saturday, potentially affecting travel and daily routines.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a developing low-pressure system is expected to move through the region beginning Friday afternoon, producing moderate to locally heavy snowfall in parts of the Catskills and the mid-Hudson Valley. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon for portions of eastern New York.
Forecast snowfall totals generally range from 3 to 6 inches, with locally higher amounts possible in the Catskills. Lighter accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected farther north and east, including portions of the Capital Region, southern Vermont, western Massachusetts, and northwest Connecticut.
The heaviest snowfall is currently expected Friday evening into early Saturday, when snowfall rates may be high enough to reduce visibility and create slippery road conditions. The National Weather Service noted that a Winter Weather Advisory may be needed for additional areas as confidence increases.
Snow-covered roads, especially on higher terrain and untreated surfaces, could slow travel for commuters and holiday weekend traffic. Motorists traveling overnight or early Saturday are advised to monitor conditions and allow extra time.
Forecasters emphasized that exact snowfall amounts will depend on the storm’s track and intensity, which will be refined in later forecasts. Residents across eastern New York and western New England are encouraged to stay updated on watches, warnings, and advisories as the storm approaches.
