Monticello, New York – Roads across the Catskills and northern Poconos could turn treacherous by 7 a.m. Tuesday as freezing rain begins coating pavement, with ice buildup continuing well past the evening commute and into early Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory runs from 7 a.m. Tuesday until 3 a.m. Wednesday for Delaware and Sullivan counties in New York and Northern Wayne, Southern Wayne and Pike counties in Pennsylvania. Snow totals will stay under 1 inch, but ice accumulations could reach two tenths of an inch.

That level of icing can weigh down tree limbs and power lines while creating slick conditions on Route 17 near Monticello, Route 6 through Honesdale, and Interstate 84 around Milford. Higher elevations in Damascus, Equinunk and Walton may hold onto subfreezing temperatures longer, allowing ice to persist into the overnight hours.

PennDOT and NYSDOT urge drivers to reduce speed and check 511 services for live road updates. Sidewalks, driveways and untreated secondary roads may become hazardous.

The advisory remains in effect until 3 a.m. Wednesday, and additional alerts could follow if icing continues overnight.
