Cass County, ND – A North Dakota Highway Patrol vehicle narrowly avoided being struck Thursday night when an SUV lost control in blizzard conditions on Interstate 29.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, December 28, near mile marker 134, after a semi-truck slid into a ditch. Moments later, an SUV following behind also went off the road and skidded directly toward the patrol car, stopping just before impact.

Troopers released dashcam footage showing heavy snow and near-zero visibility at the time of the near-miss. The patrol warned that excessive speed and poor visibility remain a dangerous combination for winter drivers.

“This is what happens when speed exceeds visibility,” the Highway Patrol said in a social media post. “If you can’t see it, you can’t react to it. No travel advised—please stay home.”

Officials continue urging motorists in Cass County and eastern North Dakota to avoid unnecessary travel as crews work to clear snow and improve road conditions overnight.
