Howard Township, MI – A 78-year-old man was hospitalized Saturday evening following a car-versus-pedestrian crash in Cass County, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Clint Roach said the crash happened around 6:06 p.m. on November 7, 2025, at the intersection of Barron Lake Road and Cliffield Court in Howard Township. Deputies responded to the scene alongside Michigan State Police, Howard Township Fire, and SMCAS.

According to investigators, Joanne Haas, 55, of Cassopolis, was traveling north on Barron Lake Road when her vehicle struck Donald Welsh, 78, of Niles. Officials said Welsh was walking across Barron Lake Road from Cliffield Court at the time of impact.

Welsh was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. The sheriff’s office did not release details on the extent of his injuries.

Authorities said the crash remains under investigation, and no further information has been released.
