According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at 5:53 p.m. on Sunday, September 21, after reports of a crash at State Road 29 and County Road 400 South. Officials said a 2015 Nissan Sentra traveling westbound on County Road 400 South failed to stop at a sign and entered the path of a southbound 2020 GMC Sierra pickup.
The Nissan driver, identified as 51-year-old John Stepek of Hammond, and his passenger, 54-year-old Jennifer Stepek, both had to be extricated by firefighters and were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said the GMC pickup, driven by 79-year-old Michael Wilcox of rural Logansport, collided with the Nissan’s side. Wilcox’s passenger, 78-year-old Elizabeth Wilcox, also died at the scene.
Michael Wilcox sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and were towed from the site. The roadway was partially closed for about two and a half hours for investigation and cleanup.
