Cass County, IN – Drivers across Cass County should expect increased police presence beginning next week as the Cass County Sheriff’s Office prepares to launch enhanced holiday traffic patrols. The enforcement effort, tied to the statewide Safe Family Travel campaign, begins Tuesday, November 26, and continues through the end of December.

According to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI), deputies will focus heavily on impaired driving, aggressive driving, and seat belt violations during one of the busiest and most dangerous travel periods of the year. The campaign is supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which reports that alcohol-impaired driving remains a leading cause of fatal crashes nationwide during the holiday season.

During the month-long operation, deputies will work overtime to conduct sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols throughout Cass County, northern Indiana, and surrounding areas. Officials say the goal is to deter unsafe driving habits and encourage consistent seat belt use as holiday gatherings and winter travel increase roadway risks.

“We see the consequences of unsafe driving every day,” said Douglas Huntsinger, executive director of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. He said that simple actions—buckling up, slowing down, and never driving impaired—can significantly reduce deaths on Indiana roads during the holiday season.

Sheriff Ed Schroder added that responsible planning can prevent tragedy. “If you plan to drink, plan a safe ride home,” he said. “Stay sober behind the wheel or arrange a sober ride before the night begins.”

Motorists are encouraged to call 911 to report unsafe or impaired drivers. Additional safety guidance is available through NHTSA at nhtsa.gov/risky-driving.
