Cassopolis, MI – A two-vehicle crash in Jefferson Township injured one man early Saturday morning, police said.
The collision occurred around 6:34 a.m. near M-62 and Yankee Street. Sheriff Clint Roach reported that Alonzo King Jr., 23, of Goshen, Indiana, lost control of his vehicle while traveling north on M-62. King’s vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree before coming to rest in the southbound lane.
A southbound vehicle driven by Maxwell VanGoey, 26, of Vandalia, Michigan, swerved to avoid King’s vehicle. VanGoey’s vehicle left the roadway, struck a ditch, and hit a tree.
According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, King was transported to Niles Lakeland Hospital by SMCAS Ambulance. VanGoey was checked at the scene and released. Police said both drivers were wearing seatbelts, and alcohol is believed to have contributed to the crash.
The crash remains under investigation. Assisting agencies included SMCAS Ambulance, Edwardsburg Fire, Michigan State Police, and Ontwa-Edwardsburg Police Department.
