Cascade, Idaho – A minor earthquake rattled parts of Valley County late Saturday morning, centered roughly 20 kilometers southeast of Cascade. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the magnitude 2.8 quake struck at a depth of about 9.9 kilometers, a relatively shallow event that may have produced light shaking near the epicenter.
According to the USGS, the tremor occurred at 12:20 p.m. local time and was reviewed and confirmed by seismologists. So far, no damage or injury reports have been filed, and no residents have submitted “Did You Feel It?” responses through the agency’s reporting tool.
While a 2.8 magnitude quake is considered minor, local emergency officials remind residents that even small tremors can signal broader seismic activity in Idaho’s central mountain region. Homeowners are encouraged to check that heavy items are secured and to keep emergency supplies accessible in case of stronger aftershocks.
This area of Valley County experiences periodic low-level seismic activity, often linked to faults that run beneath the Salmon River Mountains. No additional quakes have been detected within a 250-kilometer radius in the past three weeks, but officials continue to monitor for aftershocks.
USGS scientists say the event poses no immediate risk, though residents are encouraged to report any shaking they experienced to aid ongoing seismic tracking across Idaho.
