Medford, Ore. – Southern Oregon faces a heightened wildfire threat Saturday as a Red Flag Warning remains in effect for areas east of Interstate 5 and into the Cascade Crest. The warning, issued by the National Weather Service in Medford, cites abundant lightning on dry fuels that could spark multiple new fires by late evening.
According to the National Weather Service, the warning runs from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and includes western Siskiyou County. Forecasters expect isolated to scattered thunderstorms, producing dangerous lightning strikes and gusty winds that may spread flames quickly.
Travelers on I-5 and residents in Medford, Ashland, and Grants Pass should stay alert for sudden fire starts and shifting smoke. Emergency managers urge people to avoid outdoor burning, secure vehicles and equipment that could cause sparks, and prepare to evacuate quickly if new fires erupt.
This warning comes ahead of a major shift in weather early next week. By Monday, low pressure will bring widespread rainfall, cooler temperatures, and a fall-like pattern through Wednesday, easing fire conditions but raising the chance for gusty winds and scattered thunderstorms.
Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, as additional advisories may be issued.
