Elizabethton, Tennessee – The Carter County Sheriff’s Office issued a scam warning Tuesday after receiving increased reports of phone and cryptocurrency fraud across the county.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, residents have reported multiple scam attempts involving callers posing as law enforcement officers, bank representatives, federal agents, and technology support personnel. Officials emphasized that no legitimate law enforcement agency or business will request payment using gift cards, digital currency, or cryptocurrency.

Investigators said scammers frequently demand payment through services such as GreenDot, MoneyPak, Apple, Amazon, PayPal, Cash App, or Chime. In some cases, callers falsely claim a warrant has been issued and demand immediate payment to avoid arrest.

Authorities also warned about cryptocurrency investment schemes described as Ponzi-style operations. Victims are encouraged to invest small amounts of money with promises of doubled returns, only to lose funds once larger deposits are made.

The Sheriff’s Office stressed that legitimate agencies will not contact individuals demanding payment in exchange for avoiding legal action.

Residents along major corridors including U.S. Highway 19E, State Route 67, and U.S. Highway 321 have reported scam attempts, though officials say the activity is countywide.

Anyone who believes they have been targeted or victimized is urged to contact local law enforcement immediately, as fraud investigations are time-sensitive.

Officials advise residents to verify unsolicited calls independently and never provide financial information or payment under pressure.

Young adults, elderly residents, and online investors are often targeted in these schemes.
