Van Buren, Mo. – Drivers and residents in Carter County face a dangerous afternoon as the National Weather Service warns of ongoing flash flooding in parts of southeast Missouri through 5 p.m. Tuesday. Heavy thunderstorms have already dropped up to 2 inches of rain, with more expected in the next few hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, radar estimates show an additional 0.5 to 1.5 inches of rainfall could fall before storms move out. Low-lying areas, small creeks, and urban streets in Van Buren, Fremont, and surrounding communities are most at risk for rapid water rise.
Several low water crossings in the Ozark foothills could become impassable, and officials urge motorists to avoid flooded roads. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains the safest approach, especially on rural routes where flood depths can be deceptive.
Residents should move vehicles to higher ground, avoid unnecessary travel, and prepare for sudden road closures as storms continue. The flood warning remains in effect until 5 p.m., but additional alerts may follow if heavy rain lingers into the evening.
