Eldersburg, MD – A late-night shoplifting complaint at the Eldersburg Walmart ended in a high-speed pursuit Monday night, leaving one man in custody after deputies say they recovered stolen merchandise and suspected cocaine. The incident unfolded shortly before 10:45 p.m. on Liberty Road near Ridge Road.

According to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the Walmart Supercenter on December 8 after reports that a suspect had left the store in a blue minivan. Deputies located the vehicle traveling eastbound and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver allegedly fled at a high rate of speed. A deputy deployed a tire-deflation device on Liberty Road near Fallon Road, successfully slowing the vehicle. The pursuit ended minutes later when deputies boxed in the van near the Baltimore County line, taking the suspect into custody around 10:47 p.m.

Deputies identified the suspect as Antowan Theron Evans, a 54-year-old man with a Randallstown address. Inside the vehicle, deputies reportedly found a basket of miscellaneous stolen Walmart merchandise valued at more than $400, along with two containers of substances believed to be cocaine.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, additional suspected cocaine was located during Evans’ intake at Carroll County Central Booking. Along with multiple traffic citations tied to the pursuit, Evans faces several charges, including theft between $100 and $1,500, possession of contraband in a place of confinement, and CDS possession (not cannabis).

As of Tuesday morning, Evans remains at the Carroll County Detention Center pending a bail review hearing.
