Greenville, South Carolina – Scattered showers and thunderstorms could develop across the western Carolinas Sunday afternoon and evening, but the greater severe weather threat is expected Monday morning into Monday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg.

Forecasters say isolated strong storms may develop ahead of an approaching cold front Sunday, producing brief heavy rain and gusty winds.

However, conditions become more favorable for severe weather early Monday as the cold front moves across the region.

The main threats Monday include damaging wind gusts and possible tornadoes, especially across parts of Upstate South Carolina and western North Carolina.

Meteorologists say the most concerning window for severe weather will be from around daybreak Monday through the afternoon hours as storms track east across the area.

Communities including Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, and surrounding areas should closely monitor forecasts and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.

Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, especially since some storms could occur during the morning commute.

Officials recommend staying weather aware and having a plan in place in case tornado warnings or severe thunderstorm warnings are issued Monday.
