Greenville, SC – Dangerous heat and a pair of severe weather rounds could impact much of the Carolinas through late Friday, with high heat indices this afternoon followed by strong to severe thunderstorms stretching into early Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, afternoon highs will reach the upper 80s to lower 90s, with heat indices climbing toward 100°F in some areas. A round of severe storms may develop late this afternoon and early evening, mainly along and north of I-40 in North Carolina, bringing threats of golf ball-sized hail and damaging winds.

A second line of storms is expected to move in overnight, primarily impacting the North Carolina mountains. These storms could produce additional strong winds, heavy rainfall, and isolated tornadoes. Cities including Asheville, Hickory, and Boone are under heightened risk, while Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson may see storms with gusty winds later tonight.

Drivers should stay off roads during storm periods, especially in high-risk hail zones. Residents in mountain areas should prepare for power outages and secure loose outdoor items ahead of the overnight line.

Storm watches remain in effect through early Saturday, with additional warnings possible as conditions evolve.
