Wilmington, NC – Much of southeast North Carolina and northeast South Carolina is under an Extreme Cold Watch from Sunday evening through Monday morning, as temperatures and wind chills plunge across the region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wilmington.
According to forecasters, wind chills may fall to 5 to 10 degrees above zero, impacting a large area including Robeson, Bladen, Columbus, Pender, New Hanover, Brunswick, Marlboro, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Marion, Williamsburg, and Horry counties. Cities such as Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, Conway, Lumberton, Florence, and Whiteville may feel the most significant cold early Monday.
NWS officials warn that even these non-subzero wind chills can cause hypothermia or frostbite if residents remain outdoors without proper protection. The cold air mass is expected to tighten its grip late Sunday as winds increase behind a strong front, sending temperatures tumbling across both coastal and inland communities.
Emergency managers urge residents to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and use heaters safely. Homeowners should wrap or drain pipes or allow them to drip slowly to prevent freezing. Families are also encouraged to check in on older relatives, neighbors, and anyone living in homes that may lack sufficient insulation.
Forecasters say more updates will be issued as the Arctic air approaches the region.
